Why harness fit matters more than most people realise
A harness that fits badly does not just look wrong. It changes how a dog moves.
Research published in the Veterinary Record (Harran et al., 2016) measured the effect of harness design on shoulder and limb movement in dogs. The finding: harnesses with a strap crossing the front of the shoulder joint reduced the range of motion in that joint during walking. The restriction was measurable, even in dogs that showed no visible signs of discomfort.
This matters for a few reasons. Restricted shoulder movement over time can contribute to compensatory patterns elsewhere in the body. And because dogs rarely signal discomfort the way we would, a poorly fitted harness can go unnoticed for months.
What good fit looks like in practice: the harness should sit clear of the shoulder joint and not pull tight across the chest when the dog moves forward. The back piece should lie flat without twisting. And fit should be checked regularly, because dogs change shape.
